Girl Scouts Merit Badge – RECAP

Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 13258 & 13449 for visiting i3 Detroit to learn about DIY Silly Bands and Blinky Bugs.

The class was a huge success and not only allowed the girls & parents to check out i3 but each girl walked away with a custom Silly Band and Blinky Bug which they all did by themselves.

We have another troop visiting later this month as well.  Will need to work on getting some Boy Scout troops here next.

If you have recommendations for fun projects to do with the troops, please leave a comment below.  Looking for good ideas.

Soup Swap Recap

A good chunk of the US is snowed in this morning – but at least some
of us at i3 have a stash of homemade soup!

In the spirit of DIY food, i3 hosted its first (annual?) Soup Swap on
Saturday, January 29 with six participants and seven soups!

— Italian Sausage
— Beef Bourguignon
— White Bean, Bacon & Kale
— Sweet Potato & Carrot Ginger
— Tart Onion
— Red Lentil Soup
— Black Bean Soup

If you’re wondering how a Soup Swap works, check out www.soupswap.com!

If this sounds like a tasty idea, we’re thinking our next food swap
will be the 9×13 Pan Challenge: casseroles, lasagnas, enchiladas and
the like!  Summer may bring cupcakes.

i3 Rocked ConFusion 2011

What a blast!  ConFusion opened its doors and its arms to i3Detroit this past weekend.  Four of our hackers – Nick Britsky, Ted Hansen, Brad McMahon, and Ross Smith – spoke to the ConFused about the hackerspace movement, i3Detroit, and our many bizarre adventures. After talking about what hackerspaces are and their brief history, Ross handed the stage over to Nick for a virtual walk-through of our space.  Brad took control to lead our Maker Faire Detroit and project story session.  Ted rounded the event out by explaining FIRST robotics and what i3Detroit does to support local teams.

Many members of the audience immediately connected with the idea of a hackerspace.  We could practically see the gears turning and synapses firing.  Thanks ConFusion for giving us this chance to present our space to you!

Canton Public Library – 1st Hack Day – Recap

Back on 11/20, i3 Detroit ventured out to Canton Public Library to help with their first Hack Day.  The total count was 6 demo tables and 8 presentations.  For the first event, they had over 100 people show up, which is pretty good.  It wasn’t as large as originally thought, but everyone had a great time.

i3 Detroit showed off some projects including EL Wire clothing and a Cigar Box guitar.  Members in attendance were Matt, Ryan and Nate.

There are plans for more hack days in the future and we will let the i3 Detroit community know as soon as we hear.  We will do a better job of getting the word out on our end as well so everyone can partake.  If you attended the event, please leave a comment below.  We are curious on your thoughts.
