Preamble: n order that everyone clearly understand the processes for making a Zone or becoming a Warden, and keeping expectations in this matter uniform across members to minimize potential for conflict, I recommend we change Section 6 in the Standing Rules as follows.

• As stated before i think the wardens should be appointed by the board and or officers not voted on as a popularity contest in the event of more than one. they can/should be reappointed annually to allow easy exit as well as easy new volunteer. The old or outgoing warden may or may not be a good judge of the replacement warden at least this should be discussed. normally not a problem unless there is more than one candidate.
• Also your appointment process is inconsistent.
  • New zone -vote by members
  • Old zone -appointed by outgoing warden

Replace the entire, existing Section 6 of the Standing Rules (below):

Section 6. Floor Plan, Wardens, and Zones

• 1. “Zones” are defined, limited areas of i3Detroit’s space that are set aside for a particular purpose (such as chemistry, electronics, or crafting).
• 2. “Wardens” are volunteer members who oversee a specific zone and enforce its organization, safe usage, and cleanliness.
  • 2.1. While wardens are responsible for organizing a zone to encourage cleanliness, organization and safety, individuals are ultimately responsible for their own safety (see 2.1 - 2.5).
  • 2.2. Wardens have final say in governing their zone and are responsible for making their rules known to members and guests.
  • 2.3. Zones may have multiple wardens as long as those wardens act in agreement as one.
  • 2.4. Members may be warden to multiple zones.
  • 2.5. The Board of Directors will by default act as warden to any zones without volunteer wardens.
• 3. The organization of zones, the wardens, the property within zones, the locations of zones, and the floor lines between them are described by the Floor Plan.
• 4. The Board of Directors is responsible making the Floor Plan known to members and guests.
• 5. It is the responsibility of all members and guests to keep i3Detroit organized according to the Floor Plan.
• 6. The Floor Plan may only be changed with the approval of the Board of Directors.  Any board member may approve.

Section 6. Floor Plan, Wardens, and Zones

• 1. “Zones” are defined, limited areas of i3Detroit’s space that are set aside for a particular purpose (such as chemistry, electronics, or crafting).
• 2. Zones are created, repurposed or decommissioned by an act of the Board, duly published in the Board minutes. Members can petition for this Board decision. The area which the Zone occupies on the Floor Plan is set at the time of creation and can be modified by an act of the Board, duly published in the Board minutes.
• 3. A current list of Zones is maintained in the wiki. It is the responsibility of the Secretary to insure the list is current.
• 4. The organization of zones, the wardens, the property within zones, the locations of zones, and the floor lines between them are described by the Floor Plan.
• 5. A current Floor Plan is maintained in the wiki. It is the responsibility of the Secretary to insure the plan is current.
• 6. It is the responsibility of all members and guests to keep i3Detroit organized according to the Floor Plan.
• 7. The Floor Plan may only be changed by an act of the Board, duly published in the Board minutes.

  • 8.3. To become a Warden of a Zone for a Zone without a Warden, petition the Membership. To become a Warden of a Zone currently having a Warden(s) requires only the assent of the existing Warden and informing the Membership. A Warden must be a Member in Good Standing.
  • 8.4. Zones may have multiple wardens as long as those wardens act in agreement as one.
  • 8.5. Members may be warden to multiple zones.
  • 8.6. The Board of Directors will by default act as warden to any zones without volunteer wardens.
  • 8.7. Term of a Warden is lifetime, only limited by either:
    • 8.7.1. Termination of membership in i3Detroit.
    • 8.7.2. Resignation as Warden.
    • 8.7.3. Removal as Warden by an act of the Membership, duly published in the Membership minutes.

• 9. The Warden's Role and Responsibilities are as follows:
  • Be the Champion for the Zone.
  • Be the contact point/negotiator/approval for all equipment loans and donations intended to reside in the Zone. Nothing is in the Zone except that which has been ** approved by the Warden.
  • Coordinate maintenance on the equipment in the zone.
  • Coordinate plans for Zone Growth and request resources from the Board when necessary.
  • Coordinate “neighbor issues” with neighboring zones.
  • Make training and orientation available to those who wish it.
  • Set and publish in the wiki all Zone Rules, including access to and training required for Zone equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory list of all items loaned/or i3-owned within the Zone on the wiki. And keep all tools marked, with Zone and owner.
  • Be the contact point for loaned equipment leaving the zone.
  • Coordinate making the zone useful, fun and safe for those who use it.
  • Prepare and revise annual Zone budget.
