i3 Detroit Space

We have finally found our new home for i3 Detroit. We have agreed upon moving into the Russell Industrial Center. The Russell Industrial Center space is a very unique space in regards to low costs, the local community and the growth opportunities. We are collecting dues from all members next Tuesday July 7th to help raise the funds for the initial costs of getting into our new space. We are also holding our first fundraiser on Saturday July 11th from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m in the Go Comedy parking lot in downtown Ferndale.

If you have been following i3 Detroit and would like to help i3 Detroit get into our new space as soon as possible please donate what you can. If you have been waiting for us to get a space before becoming a member now is the time. The monthly membership dues are $50 per month and can be paid in cash at our weekly meetings on Tuesday. If you would like to pay via credit card we have a paypal donation link at the bottom of our membership page on the main www.i3detroit.com website. If you would like to donate a larger amount we also have an open amount paypal link on our sponsorship page.

i3 Detroit will be renting a 600 square foot loft space which we are allowed to finish the space as we wish. The ceilings are 14 ft high and our monthly rent includes our electricity as well. Once we have signed the lease and have our $1400 we will immediatly begin the build out of our new space. Once the space has been built out we will be holding a Grand Opening party for both members and non members to come and see the new space.

We will begin weekly classes as well once our space has been completed.

Please Join us during this new and exciting time for i3 Detroit!

i3 Detroit Community Recycle Day Event

The i3 Detroit technology cooperative will hold an electronics recycling drive on Saturday July 11th, 2009, in downtown Ferndale. Volunteers from i3 Detroit will accept drop-offs from 9AM to 3PM outside of Go Comedy, 261 E. 9 Mile Rd., Ferndale. The group will also hold a raffle for $300 in prizes at the event.

In Metro Detroit, electronics cannot be recycled curbside. Instead, residents usually have to make an appointment to take their old electronics to a SOCCRA drop-off center[1]. The i3 recycling drive will give Metro Detroiters an alternative way to recycle their old electronics, as well as raise awareness for the importance of electronics recycling in general.

According to the EPA, electronics can contain harmful materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants[2]. Keeping these materials out of landfills can help reduce air and water pollution. All electronics collected at the event by the experts from skips will be recycled.

Attendees will also be able to purchase raffle tickets for laptop cases from SFBags, jinx.com gift certificates, and t-shirts from Snorg Tees. The proceeds will go towards opening i3 Detroit’s community workshop in the Russell Industrial Center.

LEMUR: League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots

LEMUR will be at MOCAD this Friday June 26th as a part of the Midsummer Nights in Midtown series at 8:45 P.M and 10:30 P.M. The show is free of charge and open to the public. If you would like to learn more please visit them at their website.

What is LEMUR?

League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots is a Brooklyn-based group of artists and technologists who create robotic musical instruments. Founded in 2000 by musician and engineer Eric Singer, LEMUR creates exotic, sculptural musical instruments which integrate robotic technology. LEMUR’s philosophy is to build robots that are new types of musical instruments, as opposed to animatronic robots that play existing instruments.

LEMUR’s growing ensemble includes over 50 robotic instruments. GuitarBot, an electric stringed instrument, is comprised of several independently controllable stringed units which can pick and slide extremely rapidly. ModBots are a large collection of modular percussion robots in a variety of styles and functions, including beaters, singing bells and shakers. The Ill-Tempered Clangier is a robotic xylophone-like tubular bell instrument which clangs percussive melodies on forty-four tuned metal pipes. ForestBot is comprised of a forest of egg-shaped rattles sprouting from long rods that quiver and sway over onlookers. TibetBot is designed around three Tibetan singing bowls struck by robotic arms to produce a range of timbres.

LEMUR is supported in part by generous grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Greenwall Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Experimental Television Center and Materials for the Arts. LEMUR is also supported by Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center.

Potential Space

I started to look at the Russell Industrial Center to see what we can get space wise to start. I feel that this would probably be a good place for us to call home for a while as well as to help build our member base. I know that it is not the ideal location for all of us but the pricing is right.

Space Information:

600 SQ. FT – $450.00 per month and includes heat and electric – These small spaces are on the inside of the building and do not have any exterior walls with windows. They say the spaces stay pretty warm and assume for added heat people use space heaters.

1000 SQ. FT – $550.00 per month includes heat but goes to metered electrical

The building has 24 hour access and is also 24 hour security on premise, parking is free and we will not have any problems with having public people coming into the space for meetings etc… In the main lobby they provide a layout of the building with information on all companies and groups to make finding us easy.

The building is full of other artists, film studios, music studios etc… this could be good for meeting others and possibly growing our member base. This would also allow us to start teaching classes. We are free to do what we wish with the space as far as painting, build out etc… The building is fully wired by comcast and we can contact them for internet, cable or phone services. Noise is not really an issue. They also host art gallery tours, showings, films etc… which could also bring in new members.

I am attaching a few photos of a space for everyone to get an idea. The ceilings are approx. 14 ft. tall. I like the fact that our electrical/heating costs are included in the price. The spaces do not have personal bathrooms. There are shared bathrooms on the floors that is used amongst all renters.

How this works:

Rental information – This is a month to month program that requires 2 months deposit + first months rent down – $1350.00
They require 30 days notice up front if leaving the space.

Insurance – 1 million liability insurance policy + renter insurance which covers theft, fire, etc… This will cost us approx. $350 – $450 per year or $37.50 per month.

We are still seeking to find new members that are interested in participating in our group. I am looking for everyone’s input on your thoughts of this potential space. Please post comments of what you think.
