Maker Faire 2013 and the Official After Party

Maker Faire Detroit – July 27-28 9:30am – 6:00pm

With over a dozen projects from the members of i3 Detroit spread across the faire, make sure you don’t miss anything, check out inside the museum along with the i3 tent. Don’t miss the laminar flow fountain our president Matt Oehrlein has put together with the help of his fellow members. http://laminarfountain.blogspot.com/
If you have not had a chance to stop by the space, come to maker faire and see what our members have created.
Afterwards come over to i3 (Saturday 27, 7pm) and enjoy the company of other makers from local and afar.

2013 MAKER FAIRE OFFICIAL AFTER PARTY

Make hard, play hard. That’s what we say over at i3 Detroit – Metro Detroit’s D.I.Y. Workspace. Okay, we don’t actually say that, but maybe we should start.
On Saturday, July 27th, i3 Detroit will open its doors to Maker Faire’s finest, and those curious about the creative and inspiring environment we have cultivated at our location. Come on over, take a tour, talk shop, and meet some of the creative geniuses behind your favorite projects you saw at Maker Faire.

We’ll have food and snacks, some “adult beverages” (heh heh), and music to keep you entertained well into the night.

We’re getting some parking details worked out right now at a vacant lot right next to us. We’ll have a parking attendant monitor it, so all your goodies will be nice and safe.

Happy Pi Day!

It’s 3-14 and that means it’s time to make bad pi/pie jokes! Won’t you join us?

This evening at i3 Detroit:

  • Laser-cut a nice acrylic case for your Raspberry Pi!
  • Savor Meijer’s finest gourmet raspberry pies!
  • Share projects you’ve completed or only just started!
  • Pun-ish each other with brutal wordplay and awful jokes!

Car hacking: Friday, 7pm. You’re invited.

IMG_0058Q: What has four wheels and fifteen computers?

A: Your car!

For years, I’ve described hackers as “greasemonkeys with cleaner fingernails”. The eagerness to dive into a complex system, the urge to squeeze more performance out of one’s daily-driver, the itch to tinker with something that already “works just fine”. Sound familiar?

As the computer industry and the auto industry continue to overlap, we find ourselves in an interesting spot: Cars are increasingly “street-legal cellphones”, with more and more of their functionality controlled by software, connected through data networks, and accessible to anyone with the right tools and know-how.

Tools and know-how are more powerful when they’re shared, and that’s where i3 Detroit comes in! From logic analyzers to CANbus interfaces, our members and guest community enjoy access to a growing complement of car-hacking tools. But people are the other half of the equation, so Friday’s meetup has two main goals:

1. To connect interested individuals, both within and outside i3’s membership.

2. To familiarize everyone with the tools available and projects afoot, including (tentatively) a demonstration of the OpenXC Platform.

This is the first in a recurring series of car-hacking meetups, which happen monthly on the fourth Friday at i3 Detroit. Come play.
