Come FLOSS this Saturday!

Announcing ‘Open Source Saturday’ or OSS.

We’re starting up a series of meetups, workshops, and classes to meet the growing interest in free and open source technology. All are welcome to attend and learn why free software is a good thing.

This OSS: Workshop : SSH + Screen

Ever wanted to have access to a computer without physically being there? VNC and RDP seem too slow and clunky? Too paranoid to surf the net at a coffee shop, or just don’t trust those on the same network as you? This Saturday we’ll explore the power and wonder of SSH and Screen, probably two of the most used and useful commands. You’ll learn to copy and share files across the net, tunnel your web traffic in a safe and secure manner. Even if you already know SSH / Screen you’re bound to learn something new.  At the very least, come to learn a couple new acronyms and have a good time.

What to expect? You should bring a laptop; or if you don’t have one, a healthy dose of patience.

We plan to start around 7pm

Road Trip – Pumping Station: One

It’s time for us to meet our fellow makers.  This Saturday, the i3 Detroit members will be making a pilgrimage to one of our neighbors in Chicago, Pumping Station: One.

Not only is the space planning a hackathon but there will also be a Didgeridoo class and a Cacophony Club meeting.  While we are not 100% sure what Cacophony club is, we know it is loud, noisy and full of circuity musical goodness.

These events are open to the public and we hope to see everyone there.  For more information check out their site at http://pumpingstationone.org/.

Open Shop Friday – 2/5

It’s time for another Open Shop Friday.  Tonight we will be exploring the new chemistry equipment, playing with fire, working on music circuits, working on the cupcake car modifications and that is just me.  Who knows what the other members will be working on.  Swing by to check out the space if you have never been or work on your project of the week.  The party starts at 7pm.  See you there.

Lock picking for Fun Saturday evening with Pumping Station:One

psoneSo what are you planning on doing this Saturday? Well you are coming out to i3 Detroit to hang out with the members from Chicago’s very own Pumping Station: One. A crew of approx. 8 members from Pumping Station: One are heading out this Saturday to spend a day and evening with everyone at i3 Detroit. Their very own Eric Michaud will be teaching a class on lock picking for fun from 8pm-10pm this coming Saturday. If you are interested in taking the class please sign up on the i3 Detroit websites class page. Also if you just want to come and hang out with the members from i3 Detroit and the great people from Pumping Station: One you are welcome to do that as well. If you have a project that you want to work on in the space bring it, if you want to hang out a chat or bounce ideas around that is ok too.

We hope to see everyone come out and meet the crew from Pumping Station: One or maybe you have not been to i3 Detroit yet and have been wanting to check it out. This would be a great weekend to do this. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
