Introduction to Jewelry Making Class

The i3Detroit Jewelry Zone is proud to announce our first workshop:   “Introduction to Jewelry Making”.  This two day workshop is a great opportunity if you are new to jewelry making and would like to learn what it is all about.

Class Goals:
Introduction to Jewelry Making

   Overview of Jewelry Making Techniques
   Review of Jewelry Making Materials
   Focus on Metals Used in Jewelry Making

Working in the Jewelry Zone
   Safety
   Ground Rules
   Equipment
   Tools

Students will:
You will make and take home a handmade and uniquely decorated pendant or keychain fob (your choice) made from at least two different metals.  All tools and materials will be provided.


For this project, you will learn how to:   cut with a jeweler’s saw and metal shear, properly file rough edges on metal, drill holes in metal using at least two different methods, create surface texture, basic soldering principles, applying patina solution (color) on metal, and finishing/polishing.

Prerequisites:
Students must be at least 18 years old or be accompanied by a legal guardian who is also registered.

What to Bring:
Hair ties for long hair, closed-toed shoes, short-sleeve shirt. All other materials needed for class will be provided.

Instructor:
Leora Druckman has been making Jewelry for over 30 years.  Starting in college with beaded jewelry, she has since learned many additional techniques including metalsmithing, wirework, textile techniques in metal, enameling, polymer and metal clays and kiln glass work.  Her work has been displayed at juried exhibits at the Birmingham/Bloomfield Art Center, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Janice Charach Gallery at the Jewish Community Center of Detroit.  She has taken classes at both the Ann Arbor and Birmingham/Bloomfield art centers and attended a number of workshops taught by notable artists including Charles Lewton-Brain, Andy Cooperman, Linda Darty, Michael Boyd and others.  Leora is an experienced instructor with a Master’s Degree in Education from Michigan State University.  She is also a member of the Michigan Silversmith’s guild and on the board of i3Detroit.  Leora lives in the Detroit area, with her husband Daniel.

Saturday, October 17th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm  AND Sunday, October 18th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
