Troy Children’s Hospital Project

In the fall of 2014 the Detroit Medical Center, Children’s Hospital contacted i3 for some help with an art project for the New Children’s Hospital branch in Troy Michigan. This facility was set to open by early 2016.

Roger S and Greg S volunteered to help and made contact with Grace Serra the Art Director for DMC. I3Detroit also contributed money for the material and laser time.

The project consisted of making some cutouts to be painted by children’s groups in the Troy and surrounding areas. The cutouts were to be a tessellated design representing the 4 seasons, Snowflakes for winter, Butterflies for spring, Birds for summer, and leaves for Fall.

Roger and Greg developed the graphic art work from some photos and then converted them into the vector art needed to cut out the objects with the i3 laser cutter. Some development was done to determine what the best substrate for the objects would be, and then a one side smooth Masonite was chosen to best meet the needs.

In total over 3,000 elements were cut and handed over to Grace for distribution

I3Detroit also had a booth at the 2015 Maker Faire where they provided cutouts and paint for children attendees. These pieces were mounted and there are 3 panels labeled as such mounted in the hospital. At the Student Art Preview, the DMC Staff thanked i3 for their contribution.

The i3 panels and other art work can be seen at the Community Open House on January 23rd from 11 am until 2 pm. Attendees will be able to see the fantastic art tessellations and other creative work, that the DMC art department coordinated for this facility.

The Hospital is located at 350 W. Bigbeaver road. Just east of Troy city hall.

The included photos are of some of the panels and a photo from the Maker Faire.
