==Chapter 1: The Meeting==

You walk into a giant warehouse filled with fascinating projects and incredible machines. There is a faint smell of sawdust in the air. You see a conference table in the center of the room with 30 individuals seated around it. Each are working on a small project, typing on their computer or chatting with one and other. A tall man in a white suit invites you to join the group.

"Welcome to i3 Detroit. You look lost." says the man. "You must have heard of the secret event we are planning. Would you like to help?"

This page is for planning i3's participation at the 2011 Penguicon.

Brad and Roger (Karen, where were you?) met and came up with this so far:
Brainstorm thoughts in no particular order ...

===Green Room===
Open 24 hours with scheduled activities:
:3 pm - 8 pm Friday
:9 am - 8 pm Saturday
:9 am - 3 pm Sunday
:Note that these are planned ''available'' hours, not committed hours.

We have a budget from Penguicon of $500 for anything needed.

Three areas:
:eRoom
:crafts
:mechanics

Hands-on workshops
*How to Solder - Mitch / Jimmy, maybe have twice
*Creative mending class
*Oscilloscope class
*Using the Cloud (e.g., Amazon S3 vs Google vs ?)
*Intro to PCB layout and design with FreePCB - Trevor[0]

Open "office hours" when not scheduled for workshop - who will staff?

Contests
*Contests for skills, e.g., assembling an electronics kit, sewing something
*Contests for creativity, e.g., give people a bunch of stuff and make something
*Prizes related to the topic of the contest
*Make unique prizes like a soldering iron holder trophy cast from someone's hand
*An "Anything But Ethernet" communication contest

Arduino
- Custom Arduino circuit boards with i3 printed / etched on them
- First to do something or one of a choice of things using an arduino (or other thing)

AVR
- AVR programming challenge (ideas?)

Relay Race (Matt)
#Pick a Padlock
#Link Buckyballs
#Hula-Hoop helicopter course
#(something else)

===Suite===
A mini-i3
*Showcase projects
*Post large pictures of i3 to form a "virtual i3" space
*Video composite of events we've held/attended. - Needs video and photos from everyone (Nate_LapT)
Open 3 pm Fri - 3 pm Sun

====Parties====
Two room parties from 9 pm to 3 am (or when drinks run out!)
*Need a dedicated bartender for each party, nit just "shifts" (Roger for one?)
*Music from Ammo Box or Pirate Box

====Other Activities====
Things to get people to interact:
*Vinyl cutter: let people customize and make something to show off?
*Makerbot: let people customize and make something to show off?
*i3no (read it out loud)
*Write on your friend's forehead and upload picture for prizes (or was this just for the party?)
*QR Challenge - Ribbons for those who complete the challenge. (Yeh,ney?)

===Other Places at the Hotel===
*Lobby posters
*Lobby schedule
*QR codes linked to website pages of containing
*Skeeball in hallway (Matt promises it will be ready!)
*MIT Mystery / Scavenger Hunt (Ed?)
===Publicity===
Ribbons (from previous discussion on group blog)

== Store ==

The gray and gray/yellow drawers on the back wall are the electronics store. These components are for sale to anyone who has a use for them. Place payment in the drawer labeled with bold dollar signs and the word "payment" near the lower right.

If you don't know what a component costs, find it on http://mouser.com/ and add 10% to cover shipping. If you need change, you can make it with funds from the soda payment cup in the fridge. However, these funds go to different people, so don't just drop money in the wrong cup.

Some members may have components or salvageable parts that they will share but which may not be part of the electronics store. Use your judgment when taking those things.

If you wish to donate components to the store, feel free to do so. If it is clear where they should belong, just drop them in. Avoid placing them in an unlabeled drawer or bin. If you don't know where something belongs, ask [[user:nbezanson|Nate B]], or leave a note indicating your intent and he will find or make a place so the parts can remain organized.

== Etiquette ==

As with all of i3, leave nothing on the workbenches. The only thing permissible to leave on a workbench is the Edsyn soldering station and the tip cleaner. Your project can be stored in a labeled box in the electronics room if you are actively working on it and it is small. Otherwise, take it home or use a larger member storage area in the shop area.

If you were trimming or stripping wires, consider sweeping before you leave.

== Acquisition ==
Parts on this list will be ordered ASAP.

* There will be two mealtimes: "lunch" at ~1pm and "dinner" at ~7pm, or whenever somebody starts cooking!
* Snacks of various kinds will be available throughout.
* Beverages will be BYOB since we've already got a supply of pop in the kitchen. This is a great opportunity to restock your favorites if they're running low!
* There is a grill at the space, right?
* If you have a crockpot, please consider using it! We don't have proper kitchen at the space, so crockpots and such will be helpful for supplying us all with hot food.
* Please avoid common allergens (or put them on the side) if they're optional in your recipe: nuts, dairy, wheat, etc.

a.k.a Festplattenlaufwerk Klavier

While rebuilding a piano player to its original glory is fun, there are definite benefits to controlling the piano electronically, namely through MIDI.

The original intent of this project is to make such a retrofit for my player piano. Sadly, if I wanted to do this with solenoid actuators, I would rapidly go broke.
A cheaper alternative I came up with was to utilize the reader arms from dead hard drives. Everyone has dead hard drives lying around collecting dust, so its an inexpensive source of fairly linear motion.

The ultimate goal will be for the piano to basically operate as a MIDI sound device; taking MIDI signals in and playing the piano accordingly.
Tjcookhttps://www.i3detroit.org/wi/index.php?title=MemberProjects&diff=760MemberProjects2010-06-03T18:47:18Z
Tjcook:
