i3Detroit is a collaborative environment for people to explore the new applications of art and technology. We feel the best way to create this culture is to bring together like-minded people who share a common passion for making with a wide range of technical and artistic skills. The i3 stands for Imagine, Innovate, & Inspire. Our goal is to stay a community resource through continuous hosting of various classes and events in an environment that promotes learning in a fun non-traditional format.
The organization is run by its members, who hold volunteer positions as officers, zone wardens, and directors of the board. We are proud to be one of the most influential hackerspaces in the region, yet still run entirely by the membership with no paid staff.
Founding members worked together to create a set of bylaws and standing rules that all members and supporters follow, and improve by vote as necessary.
i3Detroit is continually working with other hackerspaces and community organizations to work on projects, events, and educational opportunities.
How we fund the project?
We fund the project through our membership dues, sponsorship, fundraisers and donations. We put our funds toward paying for tools, events and classes, as well as maintaining, and upgrading our facilities. Our yearly budget is formed by requests from the membership to the treasurer, and budget items are approved at the discretion of the board of directors.
