Potty Policy

POC: Jamie

Do we want to pay for the bathrooms to be cleaned? This is just to gauge membership support - the board would do the official money-stuff

  • Most things in the space are done by members for members and we have no janitors
  • However the bathrooms are more important for hygiene reasons than other parts of the space
  • The bathrooms are easier for a company to clean who is not familiar with hackerspaces - i.e. they don't need to know where all of the lathe bits go or how to clean the laser bed without breaking everything
  • It sucks to clean the bathroom when it goes too long between cleanings. Like a lot.
  • David: thinks this could push us more toward being like Tech Shop, and also finds it disrespectful to those who have been trying to keep the bathrooms clean weekly.
  • Gary: Is there something we can do regularly to help?

Several different options but we do not have to decide on them now

  • Put a tip jar out by the bathroom for whoever cleans it
  • Pay a company market rate to clean the bathroom
  • Pay a very nice company below-market rate (this might not be OK tax-wise, the board will investigate if this option is popular)
  • Use a scholarship membership to give a bathroom cleaner/member monetary reimbursement (this is currently not how scholarships are used, so the board would have to deliberate on this)
  • David: if we start compensating for certain things it devalues all other volunteer contributions
  • Matt H: What about some kind of sign-up where everyone does it once a year?
  • Jamie: It sounds like there isn't really vocal support for paying someone to clean the bathrooms. Straw poll of those in favor/opposed was 4 in favor, 5 opposed.
  • Jody: talked to Glen about cleaning the bathrooms and they aren't as bad as they look, they just look grungy. There are a few things we can do for a couple hundred dollars that can make the bathrooms look clean when they're clean and also make them easier to clean.

Jody is going to take point on this going forward.

Firearms Policy

There was a discussion at the last board meeting based on a question of someone who was interested in manufacturing a firearm at i3.

  • Jamie: Does anyone have any strong opinions on this?
  • Matt H one of the main points of the discussion was that it is legal for a person to manufacture firearms with their own tools for themselves, but if they use another organization/company/etc (like i3) that company becomes a firearms manufacturer which is illegal unless they are registered with the ATF.
  • Thomas: The fact that its on the books as illegal and there is no group pushing for this, we should respond "no" to each individual case but not make a polarizing policy
  • Matt H: That works if someone asks first, but if someone makes it on our equipment without us knowing we are still violating the law. It's his concern as a board member that if it isn't explicitly stated somewhere then we're liable if someone does it.
  • Mark suggests a policy of 'no working on guns, unless you want to do the legwork to verify that it is legal and clear with our insurance, etc.'
  • Vivian suggests something in the onboarding that goes through the specific various things that can't be done at i3.
  • Mel asks how this is publicized to people because members may see it in the standing rules or bylaws but what about guests?
  • Jamie says that the hosting member is responsible for their guest
  • Jamie asks that since there seems like general agreement that we should proceed on this, where should we put it?
  • Matt C mentions in the onboarding process would not be very official
  • Matt H points out it probably doesn't belong in the Bylaws either.
  • Jody points out that other things like 'No auto work' aren't anyhwere in the rules either.
  • Matt C and Vivian will take point on looking into this.

NOMCon

  • Matt C, Jody, and Tony are going to representing i3 at the Nation of Makers Convention in June.
  • Let them know if there are any topics you're interested in or questions to ask, let them know.

Zone updates

Jewelry Zone

  • We had a few people inquiring about the bangle class so we are going to have another bangle class. We have two classes post, June 10th beginner enameling and June 17th bangle class.

Laser Zone

  • Wolverine got some new parts (a nozzle that won't fall off!), and Bumblebee received a few tweaks so both lasers should be cutting really well now. knocks on wood, crosses fingers, spins in a circle, and throws salt everywhere

Welding Zone

  • Got a new saw, yay! It's pretty self explanatory but ask if you need help using it.
  • One seat left in the intro to welding class that's coming up Sunday
  • There's been a lot of interest lately in weldign classes so if anyone else is interested, poke Jody about it.
