Chair: Jamie

Introductions

Experienced Members

  • Jody is here and being annoying
  • Nate is facetiously acting like a clueless newb.

New Members & Guests

  • Laura is here and excited to become a new member. She was an art teacher with a background in graphic design and is interested in laser cutting and glasswork and jewelry making.
  • Marty is here in phase 2 on his way to becoming a member.
  • Jacob is also in the process of joining and has been coming to game nights.

Show and Tell

  • Sam is currently 3d printing her first thing right now, a cookie cutter for cookie cat ice cream sandwiches.
  • Scott has an in-progress worm robot that he's been designing and building for a university research project.
  • Sean made a pair of maple earings with a patina copper inlay.

Old Business

UDM Field Trip

UDM Field Trip to i3 is a GO! (added and hosted by Jody)

  • Friday, July 13, 1pm - 3pm
  • If you are interested in helping out (give tour, demo a project or zone, general crowd control) please get in touch with Jody.
  • Students from an industrial design program will be visiting to see all the different kinds of making people do here.

NOMcon Debrief

  • Jody, Matt C., and Tony went to NOMcon (Nation of Makers Con(vention|ference)). This will be a very brief debrief of their overall thoughts.
  • A more indepth debrief will be scheduled soon for those interested.
  • Session details and notes are up at https://www.nomcon.org/conference-agenda/ (click the session name for he notes doc)
  • If you have specific questions for the trio, emailing ahead of the indepth debrief will make sure they get good answers.
  • Jody says going was definitely a good experience, but we could have sent only one or two people instead of three, and suggests that for next year.

  • Nate: How many of the represented groups there were like us, volunteer member run, not commercial or university sponsored?
  • Jody: About a quarter. About half were for profit, a quarter school affiliated, and a quarter like us.
  • Scott: Was Adam Savage there?
  • Jody: Yes, he's on the board. His talk and other talks will be uploading soon. The guy who founded Make Magazine was also there to give a talk. Hopefully the talk videos will be ready in time for the full debrief meeting.
Action Item: Jody - Bring this back up at the next meeting.

Member Exit Policy

POC: Mel (Treasurer)

This is not very clear currently. I'd like to see a clear policy in place so I know what to enforce. Specifically, there needs to be policy about what happens when people stop paying dues & when those steps occurs. We also need to decide which steps we think would happen.

The steps that I see include:

  • Turn off key access.
  • Remove storage plot.
  • Remove access to various accounts: mailing list? slack? CRM?

I'd like to see a grace period of somewhere between one week and one month before anyone's access is turned off to allow for any accidental dues non-payment. I'd also like to talk about automating some notifications during this period. Most people have their dues set to auto-pay once a month, so maybe do a notification the day after the missed dues payment, and another at some point (one week? 48 hours?) before the grace period ends?

  • Nate: Sometimes things have been done in batches, when someone would be updating the keypad, they'd deactivate keys overdue by some amount of time.
  • Mel and we don't have the ability to automatically deactivate keys but that may be being worked on.
  • Nate: There's also a question of if someone doesn't pay for a month and then pays the next month without cancelling, are they overdue by a month or do we just skip a month?
  • Mel That's sort of what hiatus was created for, but is there a difference between that and being an ex-member.
  • Nate: We creatd hiatus to keep a list of people who should still be on the mailing list, to allow an automated removal system to keep hiatus members on the list.
  • Mel: Have we ever removed someone from the mailing list forcibly other than bannings? I don't think we have.
  • Jody: Would this be something the board or membership should handle?
  • General consensus seems to be it should be the members.
  • Gary: thinks before anyone gets their key deactivated, there should be some human contact involved, like a phone call.
  • Mel: There would be automated emails.
  • Mark: Would it be fully automatic or would it be a button to push to deactivate someone?
  • Mel: Right now it's just policy we're discussing, to get that figured out before there's any automation.
  • David suggests we table this for now.
  • Mel: You can email comments to treasurer@ or discuss on Slack (suggested in the existing #dues-lockout-door channel)

Zone updates

Electronics Lab

  • Elab has a new step stool for vertically challeneged members who can't reach all the tall things.

Infrastructure

  • The AC in the front rooms has been repaired again with dielectric grease. It seems like it was blowing when it rained, so that should hopefully help. We also put in a new, properly sized breaker at ground level and will be bypassing the fuses on the room, so it can be reset from ground level if it trips again.

Laser Zone

  • Made some adjustments to Wolverine's air assist last week to allow more air flow through the system. It should be working and cutting better than it has been lately, especially on thicker material.
  • Bumblebee still needs work. Issues haven't been consistently reproducible so it's taking a while to figure out what's wrong.

Welding Zone

  • Everything seems to be working as intended
    • Camera review was performed to see who left with the gas on and the machine still set up. Person was found and contacted. No further action needed.
    • Got a report that the new saw was having difficulty, current status is: apparently functional. Count not reproduce the problem.
    • A build will be starting soon on a CNC Plasma Table. If you are interested in helping with that, please email Welding@ or ping Jody. There's also a new SIG for this, see below.
    • Welding zone would like some i3 logos vinyl'd onto the welding masks. If anybody already has some for use, please let Jody know. Otherwise, a volunteer to make some would be appreciated. Weld zone will cover costs.

SIGs

i3 MotorSports

  • Many great plans and ideas started forming right after the last Maker Faire for a new car. All that exists of that effort is a bunch of cool ideas, a bit of steel square tube in a frame shape, some mounted wheels and some plastic front suspension adjustment cams. It would probably take a huge effort to get something track-able and many of us that worked on it will not be around to assist much or even make it to Maker Faire this year.
  • Plan #2 was to make care #3 available to drive around the fair and just use as a conversation piece. I think most of the major shortcomings were addressed, and it should be drive-able with a less scary throttle system.
  • With a new set of batteries or two, it may be possible to get #3 in a race ready shape. It might be good to review the status of the tread on the tires if it's going to be used this way as well. It's probably not going to be a first place car, but it did finish a solid mid pack back in 2016 when it last ran officially at Detroit. On the positive side, it's very reliable.

CNC Gantry Builds

  • New SIG, O.M.G.!
    • Jody is heading up the build of a CNC Plasma table.
    • Upcoming plans for a CNC wood/plastic router. Maybe build, maybe buy. Feedback solicited.
    • Chat about it in #cnc_build_or_buy_sig
