Discussion Topic: Communication

  • What does everyone think of our current communication methods?
  • Show of hands: who knew we had a "Board/Leadership + Members Meet n Greet" two Mondays ago? (29th)
    • Nate: would be great if it's quarterly. Maybe a meting with everybody that isn't potluck.
  • Thoughts on cleaning up the bulletin board right by the front door and making it usable for space updates + activity?
    • One of the first things people see when they walk in
    • Could have different focus sections -- upcoming classes & events, i3 & Zone updates, a suggestion box or donation box... maybe a section for members to advertise something they're working on or request help
    • Can be cleaned up / reviewed each member meeting (or board meeting, for suggestion box)
    • What can we do with all the photos there currently? Another bulletin board, hang them up somewhere (rope/ribbon + clothespins), a scrapbook?
    • People seem to be generally fine with moving the pictures by the front door and repurposing the bulletin board for bulletins. The risk of a scrapbook is that people might confuse it with trash and it can get lost in the future as members come and go.

Expansion buildout, scary edition

  • How about a seasonally themed build day? I was thinking of bringing a crockpot of chilli and pumpkin tortilla chips, haunted house to eat. Others can bring whatever they like, if they want. We can stream thematic tunes that keep us happy and motivated, and it'll be scary how much we'll get done. Probably the 19th or the 25th. I could push something out to the list to get some more hands in Elab.

Zone updates

Automotive Zone

  • Presentation covering results from member survey.
  • 26 responses, 35-40% said it was the biggest reason they are part of i3
  • User wants to see more hands on classes and have a monthly meeting
  • Want to see less: oils pills, disorganized pools, backlash for projects gone awry
  • People want to learn to mount and balance tires
  • Feedback:
    • This is a high stakes zone. If project fail in other zones, it doesn't affect their life and other members
    • Auto zone doesn't seem accessible. Would love some welcome intro to the auto zone workshops.
    • Some people are in favor of a committee
    • Backup plans to deal with things
    • Have a sign in and sign out clipboard
  • Long discussion on auto zone etiquette and how we can improve it. There's room for improvement in organization.

  • 4x8' and 5x10' tables are progressing. Buildout is next on Sunday October 19 at noon.

Storage Zone

  • Got business card holders / index card holders (for yellow tags / name cards) put on the lockers and more of the storage plots by the laser zone the other week!
  • Took measurements of all existing Storage Plots. This info will be available when claiming plots once Storage is set up in the new CRM.
  • Reminder that you need to put a parking permit on anything you are leaving for a nonzero amount of time, and that you should not be leaving things on the tables in Commons / Classroom
    • Reminder2 that you need permission from the Zone Coordinator to leave something in a zone, or from a Board member / officer if you need to leave something for more than 4 days

Combat Robotics

  • Last weekends event went great! We had just over 30 robots and it was a smooth event! A big thanks to everyone who helped out! I am tentatively looking at running the next event on April 11th, so start designing and building now! I'm also looking for some suggestions on how best to store the arena, as we want to move it from large project storage to the space behind the couches (next to the graveyard), and I'm unsure the best way to secure the arena to the wall.
