Intro
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a medical device used to automatically diagnose the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electricity, which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.
AEDs are designed to be used by laypersons who may not have received AED training. All i3Detroit members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the principles of operation. It is encouraged for all to take a CPR course, which also covers AEDs.
The cabinet housing the AED is unlocked, but will sound an audible alarm and flashing visual light when the cabinet is open. The cabinet DOES NOT call 911/EMS, you need to do that in an emergency. The lock visible on the AED disables the alarm should the AED cabinet need to be open for a non-emergency reason for an extended time. In a real emergency, leave the cabinet open to alarm.
Andrew Youmans can provide training on the AED, please contact him if you would like training.
Rules
The Zoll AED is only to be taken out for the purposes of using it for medical purposes or instructional demonstrations.

Maintenance Info
The QR Code on the Side of the AED Box is for a Google Form to complete a log. The AED should be displaying a green check mark in the upper right, as it is positioned in the cabinet. If the AED fails a self-check, it will turn to a Red X, in this case the AED may need new batteries or service. Notify Safety Committee immediately.
The AED uses 10 Lithium 123 Batteries, and the manufacturer recommends Duracell Brand). The AED Pads have an expiration (in 2030 for current pads).
Starting in July 2025 we have a 7 year warranty for the AED, it is registered.
