Jewelry Making 101 – Forging a Wire Twist Bracelet – December 2, 2015 – 7:30 – 9:30 PM

The i3Detroit Jewelry Zone is proud to announce:   “Jewelry Making 101 – Forging a Wire Twist Bracelet”.  In this two hour class, you will make an elegant twist bracelet that you can wear with pride or give as a gift.  This FREE workshop is a great opportunity if you are new to jewelry making and would like to learn what it is all about.  Enrollment is limited.

Class Overview:
You will make an elegant twist bracelet that can you can wear with pride or give as a gift.
In addition you will learn:
–  A brief history of jewelry and jewelry making
–  What materials are used to make jewelry
–  Properties of jewelry making metals, including work hardening and annealing
–  An understanding of wire gauges and how to measure them
–  how to cut and file wire for jewelry making
–  how to forge and bend wire

When:  Wednesday night, December 2nd, 2015 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
How long:  Two hours
Where:  i3Detroit Common Area
How many people:  No more than 12

Prerequisites:
Students must be at least 18 years old or be accompanied by a legal guardian who is also registered.

What to Bring:

Hair ties for long hair, closed-toed shoes and safety glasses (if you have them). All other materials needed for class will be provided.  Safety glasses will be available for those who do not have a personal pair to use.   If you intend to make a the bracelet as a gift, have some idea of that person’s wrist size (circumference). 

Instructor:
Leora Druckman

Leora Druckman has been making Jewelry for over 30 years.  Starting in college with beaded jewelry, she has since learned many additional techniques including metalsmithing, wirework, textile techniques in metal, enameling, polymer and metal clays and kiln glass work.  Her work has been displayed at juried exhibits at the Birmingham/Bloomfield Art Center, Ann Arbor Art Center and the Janice Charach Gallery at the Jewish Community Center of Detroit.  She has taken classes at both the Ann Arbor and Birmingham/Bloomfield art centers and attended a number of workshops taught by notable artists including Charles Lewton-Brain, Andy Cooperman, Linda Darty, Michael Boyd and others.  Leora is an experienced instructor with a Master’s Degree in Education from Michigan State University.  She is also a member of the Michigan Silversmith’s Guild and on the board of i3Detroit.  Leora lives in the Detroit area, with her husband Daniel.

Other important Information:  Once you have taken this class, as a member, you will be able to work in the Jewelry Zone, but will still need training and certification to operate the kiln, Foredom rotary tool, and Acetylene/Air torch.  A sign up sheet will be available for training on those pieces of equipment.    If you are experienced on these pieces of equipment, contact the Jewelry Zone Coordinator at jewelry@i3detroit.org to schedule a certification session.
