Last Minute Leather Belt Making Class – This Saturday!

Why spend 80$ on a high quality leather belt at a random store when you can not only learn how to make your own for a fraction of the cost, but at the same time learn how to manipulate and understand leather so you can use the knowledge learned in this class for possible further leather projects!?

In this beginner leather class we will be using 6-7oz vegetable tanned leather. The benefit to using vegetable tanned leather is you will have the option of making the belt in whatever color your heart desires and learn how to dye, condition and seal the leather.

You will also have the option on making imprints and tooling the leather for more of a detailed look.

You will learn how to bevel and taper the edges for a smooth professional finish.

This class includes:

  • 3 hours of instruction from an awesome local artist
  • A pre-cut belt blank
  • Belt buckle
  • Snaps (bronze, silver, and gold)
  • Dye & Paint
  • Tools to use (for tapering the leather and various tools for engraving and embossing)

When: Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Where: i3Detroit

Test Event Test Post

I am testing to see if a new way of doing eventbrite. If this works we will have a local copy of all of the events we have and it will be integrated into our website non-shittily.

I am quite frankly suprised that this doesn’t break our website like the last attempt.

Also, Please don’t register for this event. I really don’t want to have to issue refunds and be bugged by a bunch of emails.

We keep people on our site. (Which means that we can link to our own damn site and be a strong independent hackerspace)
We can simplify creating a class. (Just write up a blag post and the leadership could do the hard part (creating eventbrite, advertisements))
I don’t have to figure out EB’s API. (If you are willing to do it please let me know.)

We end up with a bunch of iframes on our blog. (EB could disappear and we could have to fix things)

Bombs Away! Watermelon Drop Recap

An after-school program group for teens from the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs Center (MCWS) came by i3Detroit for a special event. We wanted to do an event that involved a team challenge, brainstorming, designing, and building. A lot of schools and organizations do egg drop contests. The goal would be to design some mechanism to protect and egg falling from a 10ft or higher. We wanted to amp it up to something a little more bigger and badder — a watermelon drop contest.

The group divided up into 3 teams. Each team had a coach from i3Detroit to assist with some of the more dangerous fabrication.
